first family visit

Having been away since August it was pretty damn nice to see some NZ whanau here in Hong Kong. With 13 days together stretching ahead of us, some local tourism was on the cards to begin with. Bright and early the day after they landed we jumped on a ferry and headed for Lamma Island. With two ferry terminals it’s really easy to get off at one, then walk across a chunk of the island and get a ride home from the other.

I would definitley recommend the route we took which was getting off at Sok Kwu Kwan then walking towards the power plant and main town on Lamma to catch the ferry from Yung Shue Wan back to central. The walk was lovely, starting out at a tiny fishing village with intriguing floating platforms in the bay; heading up through the hills into the bush and down into sweeping views with the incongruously located power plant as a backdrop. With a quick detour to the beach to watch dragon boat racing day (not the most spectator friendly sport as it turns out), we dodged fat rain drops as we headed for the main part of town on the island.

I had heard and read that Lamma island is a very “hippie” place and in it’s own Hong Kong kinda way it is, there were certainly plenty of vegan-raw-meditation-handmade shops and cafes going around. We ummmed and ahhhhed over where to eat and found ourself at a Dim Sum spot near the water where we eventually figured out that you helped yourself from a big table and they ticked off what you took on a bit of paper so you could pay at the end. A friendly fellow gweilo gave us some tips on which things to try and we ended up with a mostly good selection and a couple of odd things as per usual! We did a bit of a wander through the shops, hid from the rain with a hot drink for a while then jumped on the ferry home, a great way to start the visit.
